Production and Distribution Companies

Hollywood Production

I believe that our film is similar to a Hollywood film as it contains a lot of similar Hollywood film conventions. Hollywood productions tend to be big action, sci-fi or crime blockbusters that contain a lot of action sequences. As our film focuses on the actions of a crime gang, if we would have shot the entirety of our film it would have contained more than one action sequence. However, our film is set in the UK whereas Hollywood films tend to focus on American cities and the big crimes such as bank robberies and serial murders. Meanwhile, our film revolves around small heists and threats made by a local, yet notorious crime gang. Overall, our film is similar to one of Hollywood’s productions so our production company (Grimes and Rhoda) is designed similarly to one of the big Hollywood ones. Many of our deconstructions included big Hollywood production studios such as For example, ‘Warner Bros’ who have a distinctive, memorable logo with the name published beneath it. We created a similar logo for our studio shown below:

Hollywood Distribution

Most of our deconstructions were distributed in America by big Hollywood distribution companies such as GoodFellas, which was distributed by Warner Bros. Therefore, as our film matched several conventions of a Hollywood blockbuster, I believe that our film would most probably have been distributed by one of Hollywood’s big companies. Perhaps either Warner Bros or Fox Searchlight Pictures.

Hollywood Production & Distribution

Hollywood contains many large, media conglomerates and some of them own both production and distribution companies so for some films the companies may benefit from selling their rights to a certain film in both areas.

Production companies in Hollywood are mostly subsidiaries of large conglomerates as that is where they gain their funding from the film. For example there is: Warner Brothers – A subsidiary of AOL Time Warner, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Pixar Animation Studios. Production in Hollywood may take up to 3 years. The director will either create an original concept or use a famous story or character in order to create a biopic, which is becoming increasingly more successful in Hollywood recently. Production companies will attach themselves to certain directors or famous stars that they know will make them a certain profit. Common ways of doing this for Hollywood production companies is to get involved with a film that is either a sequel, a foreign remake or a franchise film like James Bond or Harry Potter.

Hollywood Distribution is essential for a film’s success in USA. A distribution deal is basically what can decide how much the film will earn as the deal relies on the consumers around the country if not the world waiting and anticipating for the film through teasers and trailers. If the film does not get a wide distribution deal, then it is mostly guaranteed to gain a minimal profit and maybe not a profit at all.

Independent Production & Distribution

Independent Production companies tend to produce films with much lower budgets and distribution deals. This is because they are not subsidiaries of rich, Hollywood conglomerates so they only gain their funding through fundraising from different organizations such as The BBC or even just private investors. Hence the term, Independent. As a result, these production studios tend to produce films of either drama, thriller or romance genre. Special effects and editing software will be quite expensive for companies like this to use so genres such as Sci-Fi and Action will be quite difficult to properly create as these sorts of films are usually kicked off with high budgets from big conglomerates.

Opposed to Hollywood, Independent distribution companies usually do not go hand in hand with the production companies as they both individually funded companies with no ‘parent’ company. Also, distribution companies such as these don’t tend to have such wide distribution rights like Hollywood distribution companies. Again, this is because subsidiaries in Hollywood are heavily funded by conglomerates and Independent distribution companies do not have enough money to fund big actors and a large wide release.
